Mineral LOOP – A GreenWin Project : Capture and sequestration of industrial CO2 by carbonation of mineral waste
Consortium : Carmeuse, Lessines industries, Revatech, Tradecowall, ULiège – PEPs and GeMMe, Centre Terre et Pierre
Mineral waste is by far the largest waste mass in Europe. In contrast to other waste streams, they are rarely recycled and largely landfilled.
With a view to developing a circular economy for mineral waste streams, the Mineral LOOP project aims to design, develop, install and operate an industrial pilot plant for the processing of mineral waste into secondary products that can be reused in various application sectors.
The processes to be implemented will be based on the principle of carbonation, that is, the capture and fixation of CO2 in alkaline mineral materials, resulting in their stabilization.
The results will be commercialised and valorized by the industrial partners on the project.
Throughout the project, the overall environmental impact of these transformed mineral materials will be studied using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology (ULiège-PEPs).
